The Rapid Rise of Mobile Internet Adoption

By: Steph Dlugon

These days most businesses, even the teeniest mom and pop shop have some sort of online presence. It took awhile to get to this point of course. There were some pioneering, early-adopting, technophiles who paved the way, and made web ubiquity an expected part of our daily lives. But the internet boom of the ‘90s seems muted when you compare it to the incredible growth of mobile internet adoption.

Mary Meeker, Morgan Stanley Analyst presented this chart at this week’s Web 2.0 Summit held in San Francisco.

Meeker also timelines major computing cycles by decade, starting with mainframe computing in the 1950s, mini computing in the ‘60s, personal computing in the ‘80s, and desktop internet computing in the ‘90s. Mobile internet computing, not surprisingly, has been designated as the reigning trend of the 2000s. Innovation and the widespread adoption of new devices, software and services account for technology growth spurts like the one we’re seeing now in the mobile space.

According to Meeker, the iPhone and iPod Touch enjoy the fastest hardware user growth in consumer tech history.
