Saving Made Easier for the Customer

Put down the scissors, there is an easier way to save! Mobile coupon technology makes it possible for customers to download 2d barcode coupons to their phone, which can then be scanned directly from the phone’s display screen at the check out register.

One company that is currently testing the 2d barcode technology is JCPenny Co. Inc.

5574According to Media Post, the program which launched Thursday at 16 JCPenney locations, is enabled through new imaging scanners installed at registers that can read the “2D” barcode coupons and save sales clerks from having to manually enter promotional codes for coupons.

“Mobile is a good touchpoint with consumers, because instead of having to cut out a coupon or download it and print it, if they’re out and about and ready to make that decision about where to purchase, it provides an incentive to drop into a JCPenney,” -Dave Owen, development director for emerging digital media at JCPenney.

Mobile coupons would be a beneficial feature to add to a retail application. Customers would have the choice of buying directly from a retailer’s app or taking advantage of the in-store coupons conveniently stored on their phone. Mobile coupons could even be coupled with location-based advertising to capture a sale that may not have ordinarily taken place.
