With over 65,000 iPhone applications to choose from, it may seem difficult to distinguish your app from the rest. Promotion and app optimization are extremely useful. However, optimizing the app store may be part of the answer.
On July 21, 2009 this issue was addressed to Apple chief executive Tim Cook. Cook suggests that Apple is looking for new ways to improve categorization of applications within the app store.
“As you know, today we do it by type of app and also have show popular apps and top-selling apps, et cetera,” Cook said. “We realize there’s opportunity there for further improvement and are working on that.”
According to Appleinsider, developers will be asked to add a list of keywords (up to 255 characters) for their submitted applications, this will be used to improve search in the app store, resulting in a greater user experience as well as an increase in app discovery.
“It is important to enter keywords for all applications as soon as possible so your application can continue to be successfully located on the App Store,” the update from Apple reads. “Keywords can be updated with the submission of a new binary.”
Although attention has been called to the set up of the app store, Cook stands strong behind its success so far.
“The App Store is a key strategic differentiator of the iPhone and iPod Touch experience,” he said, “and we believe that outstanding software is the key ingredient for a great mobile experience.”
