My Favorite Apps of 2009

By: Steph Dlugon

It’s that time of year when everyone writes retrospectives. I thought I’d join in and share my personal picks for five apps that have managed to consume huge chunks of my time.

1. Birds by Charles Mezak
This is a great little bird watching app. It includes gorgeous photos, several recorded bird calls, a built-in birding quiz, and a way to track your bird sightings. You can even link to each birdie’s Wikipedia entry for additional information. It also has good search and browse capabilities. It costs $9.99, but it’s well worth every cent.

2. Scrabble by Electronic Arts
I’m pretty sure I have some sort of Scrabble addiction. This app costs only $2.99 and allows me to connect directly to games I’m playing on my other addiction – Facebook. You can also play multi-player games via Wi-Fi and in Quick Play mode against the computer.

3. Kalimba (free) by Chris Pavlou
I admit it. I play a mean Kalimba. This free app has allowed me to rock out and waste a slightly embarrassing amount of time. And though I don’t have any, I suspect this app would be a blast for kids. Use headphones because the sound quality over the speaker isn’t great.

4. Constitution by Clint Bagwell Consulting
It’s free, just like us! OK, that may have been a bit dorky, but this app is a great reference.

5. Mando Chords by Charles Dumont
I know this app pick only applies to a small subset of users. But if you do happen to play the mandolin, it’s very handy. Who knew there were so many two-finger chords?!

Happy Holidays. Here’s to a wonderful New Year, and a fresh batch of apps in 2010.
