According to a Wall Street Journal article, today’s “Cyber Monday” sales figures are showing a modest increase from last year. Analysts project sales in the neighborhood of $900 million, which is a 6% increase from the $846 million mark hit last year.
The WSJ article references a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation’s Shop.org division. It claims “some 87% of American retailers are hosting special Cyber Monday promotions, up from 84% last year. It also found that 96.5 million Americans plan to shop online on Cyber Monday—mostly from home — up from 85 million last year.”
Online retailers also turned to new technology to connect with shoppers and market special deals over the holidays, including Twitter feeds listing the flash discounts and online coupons passed through social networks.
Mobile apps are also emerging as an important new shopping tool. Some retailers including EBAY and SkyMall offered holiday sale specials through their mobile shopping apps.
