Is That a Phone or a Wallet in Your Pocket?

By: Cindy Kobus

Do you remember when everyone started shopping online? At first, some people were nervous about putting their credit card information on the web. Now, times have changed and nearly 9 out of 10 people surf the web for online purchasing. That means around 85 percent of the world’s web users are shopping online!

Currently, we are in another transitional period. Shopping is moving away from the computer and into your pocket, more specifically your phone. Everyday, new opportunities are being created to make mobile shopping easier. For example, mobile applications offer the end user the chance to browse catalogs without the need for Internet access. Then, once they have selected their item, they can purchase whenever is convenient for them.

This shopping experience is quickly becoming easier with the possibility to store credit card information on your phone. Similarly, there are services that allow consumers to pay with “cash” from their phone. Near Field Communication technology allows users to simply wave their phones in front of a reader to purchase an item. Don’t worry if you forget your wallet because now your phone can pay for things. As Brendan Benzing of Motricity says, people around the world will soon be asking, “Cash, credit or mobile phone?”
